Apiar Unveils Carbon1.0 OG: A Sports Watch Innovation in Material Science

Oct 11, 2026, 2:40 PM

Apiar has unveiled its latest creation, the Carbon1.0 OG sports watch, marking a significant step forward in horological material innovation. This timepiece distinguishes itself through the application of Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM), a ground-breaking production method that redefines how carbon-composite watches are crafted. By integrating a carbon-fiber external shell with a Grade 23 titanium core, Apiar delivers a watch that is both exceptionally light and structurally resilient, challenging conventional manufacturing practices in the industry.

The journey to the Carbon1.0 OG began with Apiar's co-founder, Matt Oosthuizen, whose background in industrial additive manufacturing laid the groundwork for the brand's innovative approach. Recognizing the potential of carbon fiber for creating lightweight sports watches, Oosthuizen explored new production techniques. His discovery of CBAM technology during an alumnus presentation at the University of Warwick proved pivotal, leading to its direct application in watchmaking. This fusion of advanced technology and horological craftsmanship enables the creation of complex, openworked designs that would be difficult or prohibitively expensive using traditional methods.

The outer case of the Carbon1.0 OG is meticulously formed from multiple layers of ultra-thin carbon-fiber sheets, built up through an inkjet-based process. A specialized bonding agent secures each layer, which is then infused with PEEK powder. Under controlled heat and pressure, the polymer melts, solidifying the material into a rigid composite. This method not only results in a lightweight case with superior strength but also minimizes material waste, showcasing a more sustainable manufacturing model. Following this, a 12-hour vibro-smoothing treatment refines the case, imparting a refined matte finish and ensuring optimal comfort on the wrist.

Apiar proudly showcases the layered construction of the Carbon1.0 OG, with visible striations that accentuate its industrial aesthetic. The openworked case sides offer a glimpse into the Grade 23 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) inner core, providing a captivating contrast between the materials. This titanium inner structure, produced using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), not only adds rigidity but also ingeniously integrates the 12-hour markers, framing the dial and reinforcing the watch's distinctive layered architecture. The dial itself is CNC-machined from aluminum, featuring a three-dimensional embossed pattern inspired by generative design and the intrinsic structure of carbon fiber. A black anodized finish complements the case and enhances the dial's longevity.

The watch is powered by the reliable Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement, known for its impressive 68-hour power reserve. The sandblasted hands are equipped with light blue Super-LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility in low-light conditions. Apiar is also committed to domestic production, with approximately 75% of each watch currently manufactured in the UK, a figure the brand aims to increase. Buyers have the option of two packages: the 'Additive Upgrade' includes an Alcantara strap with a 3D-printed titanium clasp and a PA12 travel case for US$2,080 / £1,820, while the standard version, featuring a nylon strap and a watch roll, starts at US$1,800 / £1,620. Orders are available until the end of October 2026, with deliveries anticipated within four months of purchase.

The Apiar Carbon1.0 OG stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking through innovative material science and manufacturing processes. It represents a refreshing deviation from conventional watch design, offering enthusiasts a piece that not only tells time but also tells a story of technological advancement and meticulous craftsmanship. The watch's lightweight feel and unique construction underscore Apiar's vision for the future of sports watches.
