The critically acclaimed, Tony Award-winning theatrical production, 'Jaja's African Hair Braiding,' is poised for its much-anticipated United Kingdom debut at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. The full ensemble for this compelling play has now been officially unveiled, promising a rich tapestry of performances from March 18 to April 25. This production marks a significant cultural event, bringing a celebrated Broadway success to London's vibrant theater scene.

Set against the lively backdrop of a Harlem hair braiding salon, the narrative unfolds over a single sweltering summer day. It delves into the intricate lives of West African immigrant braiders as they navigate the demands of their clientele and the complexities of their personal journeys. The play skillfully interweaves themes of ambition, community, and the often-unseen struggles faced by these women in their adopted city. It explores their resilience, dreams, and the emotional bonds forged amidst the daily hustle.

This UK premiere is particularly notable as it reunites the creative forces behind the 2023 hit, 'School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play': acclaimed writer Jocelyn Bioh and visionary director Monique Touko. Their collaborative synergy is expected to once again bring a fresh and authentic perspective to the stage, building on their previous successes. The ensemble cast features a blend of established talent and promising newcomers, including Bola Akeju as Ndidi, Zainab Jah as Jaja, and Renee Bailey in the roles of Vanessa, Sheila, and Radia. Other key performers include babirye bukilwa as Aminata, Demmy Ladipo portraying James, Franklin, Olu, and Eric, Dani Moseley as Michelle, Chrissy, and Laniece, Jadesola Odunjo as Miriam, Dolapo Oni as Bea, and Karene Peter as Jennifer. Sewa Zamba will make their professional stage debut as Marie.

'Jaja's African Hair Braiding' first captivated audiences on Broadway as part of Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2023-2024 season, quickly becoming a must-see event. Its initial limited run was extended twice due to overwhelming demand, culminating in live-streamed final performances before embarking on a U.S. national tour at the close of 2024. The play's critical success was underscored by its two Tony Awards and six nominations, along with a total of eight nominations across the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, cementing its status as a theatrical triumph.

Jocelyn Bioh expressed her profound joy and honor regarding the play's UK premiere, especially under Monique Touko's direction at the Lyric Hammersmith. She emphasized the play's core themes of love and community, sentiments deeply resonated by the success of 'School Girls' in 2023. Bioh looks forward to collaborating with much of the same creative team to deliver more laughter, joy, and connection to British audiences. Touko echoed this enthusiasm, highlighting the play's vibrant heart and soul, and the pleasure of casting a talented group of actors to bring the Harlem setting of 2019 to life. Rachel O’Riordan, the artistic director of Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, also shared her delight in welcoming back Bioh and Touko, expressing anticipation for audiences to connect with the exceptional cast as they engage with the play’s themes of hope, dreams, and humor on their stage.
