For the third consecutive year, the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Tucson is set to host two prominent gem events: the Ethical Gem Fair and the "Out of the Jewel Box" (OJB) Experience. These back-to-back showcases aim to highlight responsible sourcing and innovative design in the jewelry industry, drawing attention to a growing trend of conscious consumerism within the sector. The events are strategically located near the convention center, making them easily accessible for attendees.
The Ethical Gem Fair, running from January 30 to February 2, will feature eight distinct brands, encompassing both jewelry designers and gem dealers. These participants are united by a strong commitment to traceable materials and ethical sourcing practices. Notable names include Agere Treasures, Anza Gems, Capricorn Gems, Columbia Gem House, Nature's Geometry/Quore, Nineteen48, Perpetuum Jewels, and Virtu Gem. A new addition this year is a designer showcase, exhibiting finished jewelry that incorporates these conscientiously sourced gemstones. This initiative seeks to demonstrate the direct connection between responsible material selection and its ultimate expression in beautiful, intentional designs. Attendees can also look forward to a happy hour on Sunday, February 1, from 4 to 6 p.m., along with an optional "Sip & Stamp" scavenger hunt.
Following the Ethical Gem Fair, the OJB Experience will open its doors on Wednesday, February 4, and continue until February 7. This event will expand its floor space to accommodate a dozen additional exhibitors, including Sorbet Sapphire, Gold and Smoke, Swedish GemGroup, Renisis, Rémy Rotenier, GemologyGeek, Moyo Gems, Atelier Zobel, Integrity Gems, PCD Pearls, Willow Diamonds, and Renata Cambauva Jewelry. The kickoff for the OJB Experience is a welcome party, "Cocktails at the Cathedral," on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., sponsored by Jewelers Mutual. This gathering will also be the platform for a significant announcement regarding the future evolution of OJB.
OJB cofounder Kelly Selcer Phoundoulakis expressed enthusiasm for the returning exhibitors and the carefully selected new brands, which she believes will enrich the unique and intimate atmosphere of the event. A novel feature this year is a retro-chic coffee cart positioned outside the Cathedral, offering specialty coffee drinks. Attendees will receive a coupon for a complimentary beverage, an initiative partly sponsored by JCK.
Furthermore, Phoundoulakis highlighted the introduction of a speaker series on Saturday, which will include a rotation of short sessions. These sessions are designed to engage the industry community with thoughtful and relevant topics, providing valuable insights and fostering discussion. Designer Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel plans to unveil his latest collection, "The Power of Light," at the OJB show. This collection is a tribute to the inherent beauty of crystals, reflecting what Michael Schrodt, the brand's head of communications, describes as "tangible light that shapes our world." The collection showcases bold, one-of-a-kind pieces that combine Schmid's distinctive design with expert craftsmanship.
Other designers are also set to introduce new works. Sardwell, from Renisis, will present new pieces from the brand's Curl collection and Infinity Loop Series, including a challenging-to-construct ring featuring a blue-green indicolite tourmaline. The Infinity Loop earrings with pavé diamonds and unique Curl earrings with bullet rose-cut diamonds will also be showcased. Phoundoulakis' own brand, Gold and Smoke, will debut a series of jade bracelets and necklaces, along with new items from their Continuum series, including a stick pin featuring a fancy deep yellow-orange diamond. Erica Silverglide, founder of GemologyGeek, will launch her first collection of one-of-a-kind pieces, inspired by her deep understanding of gemstones and incorporating faceted metalwork details with a blend of art deco, antique filigree, and modern architectural influences. A distinctive feature of her collection is that all diamonds fluoresce blue, adding a unique characteristic.
