Emerging from Canada, the independent watchmaker Héron has unveiled an updated version of its Marinor dive watch, featuring notable enhancements in its design and technical specifications. This latest iteration builds upon the success of its 2023 Kickstarter debut, aiming to solidify its position in the competitive market of accessible timepieces.
While Canada may not be a traditional hub for horology, Héron is carving out a niche with its commitment to delivering impressive value. The rejuvenated Marinor showcases several key improvements that address feedback from its initial release, offering a more refined and robust experience for enthusiasts.
The upgraded Marinor boasts a case crafted from stainless steel, meticulously hardened to 1,200 HV for superior scratch resistance. The dimensions have been thoughtfully re-evaluated, resulting in a more compact and wearable profile: a 39mm diameter, a reduced lug-to-lug distance of 46mm (a 1mm decrease), and a slimmer overall thickness of 12.2mm (a 0.7mm reduction). These adjustments contribute to a more ergonomic and comfortable fit on the wrist.
Aesthetically, the watch maintains the essence of classic dive timepieces while introducing unique elements. A prominent feature is the box-type sapphire crystal, complemented by a domed sapphire bezel insert that operates unidirectionally with 120 precise clicks. The screw-down crown is thoughtfully integrated with substantial crown guards, ensuring a commendable water resistance of 250 meters. Héron’s distinctive North Star-inspired index at the 12 o’clock position sets it apart from conventional dive watch markers, offering a refreshing departure from typical triangles or rectangles. The chamfered hands and indexes are treated with blue-emitting Super-LumiNova BGW9, with the exception of the Gilt & Black variant, which utilizes Old Radium for a vintage appeal.
The Marinor is presented with a three-row flat-link stainless steel bracelet, reflecting a trend among smaller brands to prioritize high-quality bracelet designs. This bracelet features screw-secured links, with a specialized screwdriver provided for easy adjustment. The push-button clasp incorporates a discreet push-and-slide micro-adjustment extension, allowing for precise sizing. Furthermore, quick-release spring bars facilitate effortless strap changes, accommodating any 20mm strap of choice.
Beneath the solid stainless steel screw-in case back, which features an engraved depiction of a mariner (the inspiration for the watch’s name and Nordic design cues), lies the reliable Miyota 9039 automatic movement. This slim caliber operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), offers a 42-hour power reserve, and contains 24 jewels, ensuring accuracy within -10/+30 seconds per day.
The expanded range of dial options now includes four distinct choices. The original 2023 collection featured a gradient black-and-gilt dial with gold surrounds and a dark blue Atlantic dial with silver surrounds. Joining these are two vibrant new additions: the Menthol, a fresh green, and the Caribbean, a lighter blue, both offered as standard production models. This variety ensures a suitable aesthetic for diverse preferences.
