Jacob & Co. Unveils The Godfather II: A World-First Double-Melody Musical Watch

Instructions

Jacob & Co. has introduced its latest horological masterpiece, "The Godfather II," marking a significant advancement as the world's first and only double-melody musical timepiece. This exceptional creation pays homage to the beloved film, offering enthusiasts the choice between playing "The Godfather's Waltz" or "The Godfather Love Theme" from a single, ingeniously designed music-box barrel. Encased within a newly conceived 42 × 44mm rose gold frame, the watch houses a complex 510-part movement, showcasing a blend of cinematic artistry and intricate engineering. Limited to just 74 pieces, its release subtly references the year 1974, when "The Godfather Part II" first graced the silver screen.

Jacob Arabo, the visionary chairman and founder of Jacob & Co., openly regards "The Godfather Part II" as his most cherished film. The movie's enduring appeal is significantly enhanced by Nino Rota's memorable compositions, particularly "The Godfather Love Theme," which became synonymous with the franchise, and "The Godfather's Waltz," first heard during the original film's wedding festivities. For those with an appreciation for both high-end horology and iconic cinema, this watch presents a unique opportunity to own a piece of that legacy, albeit with a substantial price tag of US$440,000.

The design of "The Godfather II" watch is as compelling as its mechanical heart. It features a new rectangular, curved, Art Deco-inspired rose gold case that not only houses the complex musical mechanism but also enhances its acoustic resonance. Despite its intricate nature, the watch maintains surprisingly wearable dimensions of 42 × 44 × 17mm, with a subtly curved, ergonomic profile. The dial is a visual narrative, crafted from black lacquer with a detailed portrait of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone, complete with three-dimensional puppet strings, evoking the film's signature noir aesthetic. Further thematic elements include engraved bullet holes on the case back and a crown designed with spiral grooves, reminiscent of a gun barrel. A more serene detail is Don Corleone's rose motif, delicately engraved along the case band.

Beyond its striking aesthetics, the watch's mechanical prowess is equally impressive. The case back features a sapphire aperture that reveals the intricate music box, with its turning cylinder and combs. A plate engraved with "The Godfather Love Theme" score partly overlays this mechanism. The manual-winding caliber JCAM62 movement integrates a flying tourbillon and dual power reserve indicators—one for the watch's primary movement and another specifically for the music box. This unique construction ensures an exceptional user experience, allowing for melody selection via a pusher at 10 o'clock and activation through another at 8 o'clock. Each chosen melody plays for 15–20 seconds, with sufficient power for 8–10 repetitions on a full wind. The ability to house two melodies within a single music-box barrel, while also accommodating a one-minute flying tourbillon, is a testament to the compact and innovative engineering. The music box's 18 steel teeth, varying in length to produce different notes, are activated by a pin-studded brass cylinder. A precise lateral shift, controlled by the melody selector, alters which pins engage the comb, enabling the seamless transition between the two iconic compositions.

In the realm of cinematic sequels, it's rare for a follow-up to surpass its original. However, many, including Jacob Arabo, argue that "The Godfather Part II" achieved this feat. Fratello suggests that the "The Godfather II" timepiece similarly excels beyond its predecessor, the Opera Godfather. The new watch's 1930s-inspired case offers more refined and wearable proportions compared to the traditional round case of the original. Moreover, the enhanced capability to play two distinct melodies further elevates this latest iteration, solidifying its place as a superior homage to the legendary film.
