Seiko's Power Design Project has unveiled its latest watch collection, taking a distinctive and charming approach to watch aesthetics. Moving beyond traditional interpretations, these new chronographs draw direct inspiration from the beloved panda, transforming the animal's recognizable features into intricate watch components. This unique design concept, initially showcased at Seiko's "Incredibly Specialized Watches Exhibition," garnered considerable attention for its inventive spirit. The collection features two limited-edition models, the HHK001P1 and HHK002P1, each offering a fresh perspective on horological artistry for both watch enthusiasts and animal lovers alike.
The core of this new collection lies in its meticulous attention to panda-inspired details. Japanese designer Kiyotaka Sakai masterfully integrated the panda's visage into the watch's face. The dial, available in either a pristine white for the HHK001P1 or a delicate pink for the HHK002P1, forms the primary canvas. The two contrasting sub-dials are artfully positioned to mimic the panda's sleepy eyes, while a subtly raised mouth and nose are located at the 6 o'clock position, adding to the watch's expressive character. The textured surface of the dial is crafted to evoke the soft appearance of panda fur, enhancing the thematic depth.
Further reinforcing the playful theme, the chronograph pushers are designed to resemble the panda's round ears, adding a three-dimensional element to the watch's profile. A deliberately compact crown ensures that the overall outline of the watch head maintains a clean and harmonious shape, preserving the integrity of the panda's face. The tachymeter scale, typically found on chronographs, has been imaginatively renamed "SASAMETER," a clever nod to the Japanese word 'sasa,' which refers to bamboo grass – a panda's favorite food. Complementing this, the watch hands are shaped like bamboo leaves, weaving another layer of thematic detail into the design. The robust stainless-steel case measures 43mm in diameter and 14.6mm thick, with a cowhide leather strap that perfectly matches the respective dial color.
The dedication to the panda motif extends even to the reverse side of the watch. The case back features a specially shaped plate adorned with a three-dimensional relief depicting the panda's back and tail. Powering these meticulously crafted timepieces is Seiko's Caliber 8T61, a quartz chronograph movement known for its accuracy, maintaining a precision of ±15 seconds per month. This movement capably displays hours, minutes, central chronograph seconds, and elapsed time up to 60 minutes in 1/5-second increments, ensuring both whimsical design and reliable functionality.
The Seiko Power Design Project collection introduces two exclusive limited editions for enthusiasts worldwide. The white HHK001P1 model is limited to 3,000 pieces, while the pink HHK002P1 is even more exclusive, with only 2,000 units available. Each watch is presented in a specially designed limited-edition box, further elevating its collectible appeal. These distinctive timepieces, priced at $540, are set to be released in November 2026, and will be available through Seiko Boutiques and select retailers globally, offering a truly unique blend of playful design and precision watchmaking.
