De Beers Leads the Future of Northwest Territories' Diamond Mining

Mountain Province's Strategic Divestment from Gahcho Kué

Mountain Province Diamonds has formally relinquished its 49 percent ownership in the Gahcho Kué diamond mine, effectively transferring complete operational authority to its partner, De Beers Canada, who previously held the majority stake. This restructuring agreement is designed to release Mountain Province from the financial commitments and potential liabilities linked to the mine, while crucially retaining an avenue for future re-acquisition of an ownership interest.

Economic Pressures Driving the Decision

Jonathan Comerford, President and CEO of Mountain Province, indicated that this significant decision was made after a thorough assessment of available alternatives. The company's evaluation was primarily prompted by a substantial downturn in diamond prices over the preceding year, a trend he attributed largely to uncertainties arising from tariffs and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. These economic pressures necessitated a re-evaluation of the company's involvement in the mining operation.

Gahcho Kué's Operational History and Current Status

The Gahcho Kué mine commenced operations in 2016 as a collaborative venture between Mountain Province and De Beers. It now stands as the last operational diamond mine in the Northwest Territories, following the cessation of activities at Rio Tinto's Diavik mine and the financial difficulties leading to the receivership of the Ekati mine. This consolidation of operations under De Beers highlights a pivotal moment for the region's diamond production landscape.

Challenges Facing the Northwest Territories Diamond Sector

The transition of ownership occurs against a backdrop of increasing challenges for the diamond industry in the Northwest Territories. The Gahcho Kué mine is presently slated for closure in 2028, and a proposed expansion project faced delays earlier in the year. Discussions have also taken place concerning potential reductions in the mine's workforce, reflecting the broader economic strains impacting the sector. De Beers has affirmed its commitment to managing the mine responsibly through its remaining operational life and eventual decommissioning, focusing on safety and sustainability.
