Watches of Switzerland Group has introduced a pioneering retail strategy, integrating two distinct brands into a single, cohesive boutique. This new approach, located in Marlton, New Jersey, is designed to offer customers a comprehensive luxury shopping experience.
Watches of Switzerland and Mayors Jewelers Forge a New Retail Path in New Jersey
In a significant move within the luxury retail landscape, the Watches of Switzerland Group recently unveiled its innovative dual-brand store in Marlton, New Jersey. This marks the debut of a novel retail concept that brings together the renowned Watches of Switzerland and its acquired brand, Mayors Jewelers, under one roof. The facility, spanning an impressive 4,500 square feet, features separate external entrances for each brand, allowing customers to easily navigate towards their desired luxury timepieces or exquisite jewelry. However, once inside, the two entities merge into a fluid, interconnected environment, providing a seamless shopping journey.
The Watches of Switzerland section proudly displays an array of prestigious watch brands, including Rolex, Tudor, Omega, and Grand Seiko, catering to horology enthusiasts. Adjacent to this, Mayors Jewelers, making its inaugural appearance in New Jersey, showcases a curated selection of fine jewelry from designers such as Messika, Fope, Marco Bicego, Roberto Coin, and John Hardy. This expansion signifies Mayors Jewelers' venture beyond its traditional strongholds in Florida and Georgia, following its acquisition by Watches of Switzerland in 2017 from Canada's Birks Group.
Jack Gaffaney, President of North America for Watches of Switzerland Group U.S., emphasized the strategic importance of this dual showroom format. He highlighted the opportunity to introduce Mayors Jewelers, a brand with over a century of history, to a new market within an upscale retail destination like The Promenade at Sagemore. This initiative underscores the group's ongoing commitment to expanding its jewelry offerings alongside its world-class collection of timepieces. The interior design of the store thoughtfully reflects this integration, with changing flooring patterns subtly demarcating brand spaces, from neutral tiles to vibrant pink-red for Omega or warm wood tones for TAG Heuer, while maintaining a sophisticated ambiance with sleek display cases and soft lighting.
The industry response has been largely positive, with Rob Corder of WatchPro commending the dual-branded showroom as a transformative approach for Watches of Switzerland. He noted that this model is likely to attract a wider demographic, particularly female consumers, potentially boosting both jewelry and ladies' watch sales. Corder also speculated that such integrated retail spaces could signal a shift away from the traditional mono-brand boutique model, which often struggles with staffing and customer traffic. As of September, Watches of Switzerland operated 186 showrooms across the U.K. and U.S., including 75 dedicated mono-brand boutiques, underscoring the significance of this new retail experiment.
The introduction of this dual-brand concept by Watches of Switzerland represents a thoughtful evolution in luxury retail. It prompts a re-evaluation of traditional mono-brand strategies, suggesting that an integrated approach can create a more dynamic and engaging customer experience. By combining the allure of high-end watches with exquisite jewelry, the company not only broadens its appeal but also optimizes operational efficiencies. This model could set a new benchmark for luxury retailers seeking to enhance customer engagement and drive sales in a competitive market, encouraging others to explore similar synergistic retail ventures.
